Los Cabos, Mexico — Detail
Los Cabos, Mexico — Detail
Region: Southern tip of Baja California Sur. Two towns: Cabo San Lucas (party-ish, marina) and San José del Cabo (quieter, art galleries). The Tourist Corridor is the 20-mile strip of resorts between them. The East Cape is wilder and less developed (skip with kids unless you're going to Costa Palmas). Airport: Los Cabos International (SJD). 25–45 min to most resorts depending on location. Flight from DFW: ~3h non-stop. American Airlines only for non-stops — 2–3 flights/day. No Southwest non-stop. Either date window works. Passport: Required for all four family members.
Why Los Cabos for this trip
- Drier than the Caribbean — only 2–4 rainy days/month in July despite 100mm total (storms are brief and intense). Way less humid than Yucatán.
- No sargassum. Pacific/Sea of Cortez coast doesn't get the Caribbean seaweed bloom.
- Visually dramatic — desert meets ocean, the famous Arch, blue Sea of Cortez.
- Sea of Cortez is the warmest, calmest water of the year in July–August (80–83°F).
What to weigh against it
- MOST CABO BEACHES ARE NOT SWIMMABLE. This is the single biggest planning issue for Cabo with a 1yo and 4yo. Strong undertow, rip currents, and big surf hit much of the Pacific side and even chunks of the Corridor. Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos's beach is famously un-swimmable — multiple parent reviews describe black flags flying their entire trip. Resort selection here is dominated by beach swimmability.
- Single non-stop carrier (AA). Less price competition than Cancún; flights are ~200/adult more.
- It's HOT. 95–100°F daytime highs. Less humid than Cancún, but the heat itself is more intense.
Weather — Late July through Early August
| Metric | Range |
|---|---|
| Daytime high | 95–100°F (35–38°C) |
| Overnight low | 75–80°F (24–27°C) |
| Humidity | 70–78% — moderate-high (less than Cancún but rising in August) |
| Sea temperature | 80–83°F (27–28°C) |
| Rain | 2–4 rainy days/month; total ~100mm. Short, intense afternoon storms. |
| Sun | 10+ hrs/day |
| Hurricane risk | Low in July, rising in August, peak September. Pacific hurricanes ("chubascos") can graze Cabo — Hurricane Hilary (Aug 2023) was an example. Travel insurance with hurricane rider strongly recommended. |
| Sargassum | None on this coast |
Practical implications: Heat is the bigger consideration than in Cancún. Pool/beach time in early morning and late afternoon; midday is for AC. The Sea of Cortez side is warmer and calmer than Pacific side — important for resort choice.
Swimmable Beaches — The Most Important Map
Before resort details, learn this: not all Cabo beaches are usable for swimming. The state government posts daily flag warnings (green = swim, yellow = caution, red/black = no swimming). Red/black flags fly often on:
- Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas (Sunset Beach / Pueblo Bonito Pacifica area)
- Open Corridor beaches (Hyatt Ziva, much of Cabo del Sol, parts of San José del Cabo)
- San José del Cabo town beach (often closed to swimming)
Reliably swimmable beaches (Sea of Cortez side, sheltered or reef-protected):
| Beach | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Médano Beach | Cabo San Lucas | The party beach. Swimmable, calm. Lined with restaurants and resorts (Riu Palace, ME Cabo, Pueblo Bonito Rosé). |
| Lover's Beach | Cabo San Lucas (near Arch) | Accessible by water taxi. Swimmable on Sea of Cortez side. Not at a resort. |
| Santa Maria Bay | Corridor | Reef-protected, day-trip snorkel. Not a resort beach but easy half-day. |
| Chileno Bay | Corridor | Reef-protected, swimmable, beautiful turquoise. Chileno Bay Resort (Auberge) sits here. |
| Palmilla Beach | Corridor (San José) | One of the few reliably swimmable Corridor beaches. One&Only Palmilla sits here. |
| Cabo Real Beach | Corridor (mid) | Mostly swimmable in calm conditions. Hilton Los Cabos, Paradisus Los Cabos, Dreams Los Cabos sit on this stretch. |
This is the most important resort filter for your trip.
Resort Options
1. Dreams Los Cabos Suites Golf Resort & Spa ⭐ Best family AI on a swimmable beach
- Location: San José del Cabo, on the Cabo Real beach. ~30 min from SJD airport.
- Style: Mid-size all-inclusive (~280 suites). Part of Hyatt's Inclusive Collection. All-suite property (every room is a suite layout).
- Booking: hyatt.com | Costco Travel | Apple Vacations
Family fit:
- Explorer's Club ages 3–12 (your 4yo qualifies, your 1yo doesn't). Crafts, splash pad, sandcastle building, climbing wall, treasure hunts. Free.
- Family-friendly pools — including a splash pool with a small slide for toddlers.
- Cribs, high chairs available at no charge. No dedicated baby concierge (a downside vs. Velas/Paradisus).
- Stroller-friendly — paved paths, ramps.
Beach swimmability: Generally yes. Cabo Real beach is typically calm enough to swim, but flag warnings still apply on rough days. The resort has a sheltered swimming area.
Suite with separated bedroom:
- "Family Master Suite" — true two-room layout: master king bedroom with door, second area with two doubles or living room with sofa bed. ~860 sq ft.
- "Two-Bedroom Presidential Suite" — much larger, much pricier.
- Avoid "Deluxe Junior Suite" — partition only, no separated bedroom.
Estimated all-in price (Family Master Suite, AI, family of 4, 6 nights):
- Window A: 5,800 lodging → 7,500 trip total.
- Window B: 5,500 lodging → 7,200 trip total.
Beach & amenities: Cabo Real beach (mostly swimmable). 4 pools, 7 restaurants (a la carte, no reservations under Unlimited-Luxury package), spa, on-site golf at Cabo Real Golf Club. Sea of Cortez sunrise views.
Downsides: No formal infant program — the 1yo is entirely on parents. Property is showing wear in some buildings (renovations rolling). Lower restaurant quality than Paradisus or Velas at this price point.
2. Paradisus Los Cabos ⭐ Top luxury family AI
- Location: Cabo Real, ~25 min from SJD. Adjacent to Dreams Los Cabos on the same beach.
- Style: Luxury all-inclusive (~350 suites). Family Concierge level offers butler service.
- Booking: paradisusloscabosresort.com | Costco Travel
Family fit:
- Kids Zone ages 4–12 (your 4yo qualifies, your 1yo doesn't). Movies, games, playground, splash pad. Upstairs area for older kids.
- Family Concierge service — dedicated butler, private lounge with all-day snacks and kid-friendly drinks/games.
- Kids' turndown service — milk and cookies, video game consoles on request.
- Cribs, high chairs available. No formal baby concierge (vs. Velas) but Family Concierge butlers handle requests well.
Beach swimmability: Same Cabo Real beach as Dreams — typically swimmable.
Suite with separated bedroom:
- "Family Concierge Ocean Front Suite" — separated bedroom (king) with door, living area with sofa bed (queen-equivalent), Jacuzzi, oceanfront balcony. Family Concierge included.
- "Family Concierge Garden View Suite" — same layout, garden view, cheaper.
Estimated all-in price (Family Concierge OF Suite, AI, family of 4, 6 nights):
- Window A: 8,200 lodging → 10,000 trip total.
- Window B: 7,700 lodging → 9,500 trip total.
Beach & amenities: Sea of Cortez beach (mostly swimmable). 5 pools, multiple restaurants (Bana for Asian, La Palapa for seafood), Yhi Spa. Recently renovated.
Downsides: Family Concierge tier is a noticeable premium over standard. Without it, the suite/service tier drops markedly — basically a different resort experience. Worth it for the butler + lounge with a 1yo (formula prep, kid snacks always on hand).
3. Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos — Strong AI, but the beach problem
- Location: San José del Cabo, Corridor beach. ~15 min from SJD airport.
- Style: All-inclusive (~600+ rooms). Largest Hyatt Ziva in Mexico. Family wing + adults-only Zilara wing.
- Booking: hyatt.com | Costco Travel
Family fit:
- KidZ Club ages 4–12 with shallow water park section (good for 1yo with parent).
- Multiple splash zones, dedicated kids' pools.
- Cribs, high chairs available.
- Excellent stroller infrastructure — paved paths and ramps throughout.
Beach swimmability: ❌ No. Confirmed by multiple recent reviews and Oyster's hotel guide. Strong waves, frequent black flag warnings, "swimming not recommended." The beach is gorgeous to look at and walk on, but you and the kids will be pool-only for ocean swimming. Whale watching from shore is a positive.
Suite with separated bedroom:
- "Master Family Suite Ocean View" — separated king bedroom + second bedroom with two doubles + connecting living area, ~900 sq ft. Door separation. Solid match.
- "Two-Bedroom Suite Ocean View" — true two-bedroom layout.
- "Family Swim-Up Suite" — direct pool access from the suite, separated kids' alcove.
- Avoid "Junior Suite" categories — partition only.
Estimated all-in price (Master Family Suite, AI, family of 4, 6 nights):
- Window A: 6,800 lodging → 8,500 trip total.
- Window B: 6,300 lodging → 8,000 trip total.
Beach & amenities: Beautiful but un-swimmable ocean. 7+ pools (including swim-up suite pools), full water park section for kids, 16 dining venues. Among the best dining/variety in any AI in Mexico.
Downsides: The beach situation. If your kids would be devastated to look at a beach they can't enter, this isn't the right choice. If you're fine with "beach for walking, pool for swimming" — Ziva is otherwise outstanding.
4. Grand Velas Los Cabos — Luxury option, verify beach
- Location: Corridor (mid-Corridor, ~25 min from SJD). Pacific-adjacent — beach swimmability needs verification day-of.
- Style: Ultra-luxury all-suite all-inclusive (~300 suites). Sister property to Grand Velas Riviera Maya.
- Booking: loscabos.grandvelas.com
Family fit:
- Velas Baby Concierge — cribs, strollers, baby bottles, baby bathtubs, baby floats, organic baby food on request, "baby's first haircut" experience with certificate. Full Velas baby program.
- Kids' Club ages 4–12 (your 4yo qualifies). Comprehensive program.
- In-suite kids' welcome kit: teepee, beach toys, robes, custom nightly turndown.
- One of the strongest baby/family programs in Cabo alongside Paradisus.
Beach swimmability: Inconsistent. Grand Velas sits on a Corridor beach that is sometimes swimmable, sometimes not (flag-dependent). The resort has excellent pool infrastructure as backup.
Suite with separated bedroom:
- "Family Duplex Suite" — two-story, 1,800 sq ft. Top floor: dining area, bar, bathroom, sofa bed. Bottom floor: two queen beds, Jacuzzi bathroom. Doors separate floors. Unusual layout, kids love it.
- "Ambassador Family Suite" — two-bedroom suite, ~2,300 sq ft. Both bedrooms with doors. Baby Concierge, kids' teepee, beach toys.
- Standard "Ambassador Suite" (one-bedroom) is also available.
Estimated all-in price (Ambassador Family Suite, AI, family of 4, 6 nights):
- Window A: 11,300 lodging → 13,000 trip total.
- Window B: 10,800 lodging → 12,500 trip total.
- Velas summer promo: "Kids Stay Free + Up to $300 resort credits."
Beach & amenities: Iffy ocean swimming → reliable on pools. 4 pools, SE-Spa (one of the best in Mexico), 5 restaurants (Frida is genuinely excellent Mexican). The food is the best in this list — proper hotel restaurant experience.
Downsides: Cost. Most expensive Mexico option. Beach swimmability is unreliable — but with a baby concierge and 4 pools, you're fine ocean-aside.
5. Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort
- Location: Corridor (San José side), on the Cabo Real beach. ~25 min from SJD.
- Style: All-inclusive (recently moved to AI; previously room-only). ~375 rooms.
- Booking: hilton.com
Family fit:
- Kids' Club ages 4–12. Smaller than Hyatt Ziva's or Paradisus's program.
- Family pools, splash zone.
- Cribs available.
- Less family-focused than the AIs above — more business/couples skew historically, though new AI model is bringing more families.
Beach swimmability: Yes, mostly — same Cabo Real stretch as Dreams and Paradisus, sheltered cove area. Frequently shows up in lists of swimmable Cabo beaches.
Suite with separated bedroom:
- "One-Bedroom Suite Oceanfront" — separated king bedroom, living room with sofa bed, ocean balcony. ~700 sq ft.
- "Two-Bedroom Family Suite" — true two-bedroom, often connecting room configuration.
- Verify with the hotel that the configuration includes a closed-door bedroom separation vs. just a connecting door open between rooms.
Estimated all-in price (1BR Oceanfront Suite, AI, family of 4, 6 nights):
- Window A: 7,800 lodging → 9,500 trip total.
- Window B: 7,300 lodging → 9,000 trip total.
- Honors / Diamond status gets extra perks but no AI cost reduction.
Beach & amenities: Sheltered Cabo Real beach with calmer water than most Cabo. Multiple pools, on-site golf, 4 restaurants.
Downsides: Less family-engineered than Paradisus/Dreams. Kids' club is small. The AI experience is less seamless than the Mexican AI brands (Karisma, Velas).

Off-Resort Things to Do (with a 1yo and a 4yo)
| Activity | 1yo? | 4yo? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|

| Médano Beach | Yes | Yes | Swimmable, lined with palapas and restaurants. The Office on the Beach is the classic toes-in-sand lunch. |
| Whale shark snorkel (La Paz) | No | Marginal — anxiety | Late July is late season for whale sharks (peak Oct–Mar); usually no longer here in July. Skip. |
| Flora Farms (San José) | Yes (kid-friendly farm) | Excellent | Open-air farm-to-table restaurant with garden tour, animals. Kids can roam. Stroller-friendly. Lunch is the best meal. |
| Santa Maria Bay snorkel | Beach only | With float vest | Reef-protected cove, beginner snorkel. Half-day boat tour from Cabo San Lucas marina. |
| Chileno Bay | Beach OK | Yes | Easy swimmable beach, good toddler intro to snorkeling. Free public access, parking can be tight. |

| Wirikuta Botanical Garden / Tequila distillery | Skip | Skip | Adults activity. |
| Sea turtle release (if in season) | Yes | Excellent | Late July is generally post-nesting, pre-hatching — usually no public releases. Confirm with resort concierge. |
Best 1-day off-resort suggestion: Glass-bottom boat to the Arch + Médano Beach lunch. Half-day total, kid-friendly, iconic Cabo experience.
What to Bring (Cabo-specific)
- High-SPF sunscreen — UV is intense, kids burn fast. Mineral / reef-safe.
- Hats with neck flaps for both kids.
- Toddler-sized water shoes — Cabo beaches have rougher sand and occasional rocks.
- Long-sleeve UV-protective swim shirts. Better than reapplying sunscreen on a wiggly 1yo.
- Snack bars / familiar formula — Cabo grocery options exist but limited near resorts. Stock up at Costco / La Comer in San José if you rent a car.
- Rental car? Not necessary if you're at an all-inclusive — taxis cost 80 one way SJD→Corridor. Resort transfers usually included in AI bookings or 40 pp.
Booking Tips
- Costco Travel bundles all the major Cabo AIs with American Airlines from DFW. Historically excellent rates.
- Apple Vacations / Funjet for Karisma-style bundles if you decide on Paradisus or Hilton.
- Hyatt direct for Hyatt Ziva or Dreams Los Cabos — World of Hyatt members get loyalty perks (room upgrades, late checkout).
- AmEx Fine Hotels & Resorts: Grand Velas Los Cabos qualifies — $100 credit + breakfast + upgrade if available.
- Book by mid-June for July dates. Cabo AI summer pricing is sticky — fewer last-minute deals than Cancun because the supply is smaller and AA controls fares.
